The Facility

The new Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre is planned as a state-of-the-art 300-bed replacement for the aging MSA acute care hospital in Abbotsford and a new Cancer Centre in the BC Cancer Agency’s Lower Mainland region.

It will provide enhanced and specialized health services to more than 150,000 people in the greater Abbotsford area, and more than 330,000 in the Fraser Valley region.

As the first new hospital to be built in BC in decades, this new Hospital and Cancer Centre is a flagship project for our province. Construction of the new facility is now well underway and it’s on time and on budget, with completion scheduled for May 2008.

ARHCC Fast Facts:

  • Cost: $355 million
  • 300 beds (opening in 2008 with 261)
  • Total size: 60,000 square metres
  • Employment will double to more than 1,000 people with a total estimated payroll of $95 million annually
  • The facility is being built to accommodate future growth — another floor can be added

Services

Regional programs will include:

  • MRI Services
  • General Surgery
  • Expanded critical care with separate Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Care Unit
  • Cardiac Program (Pacemakers)
  • Renal Program: 21 additional dialysis machines at full capacity
  • BC Cancer Agency services including Breast Health and Hereditary Cancer Programs
  • Oncology services
  • Expanded medical health unit: 14 additional beds, including 6 dedicated to the needs of children and youth
  • Tertiary Palliative Care
  • Single Room Maternity Care and dedicated Operating Room for Cesarean Sections
  • Increased focus on outpatient services; separation of Ambulatory Care and General Daycare
  • Dedicated clinical decision unit in Emergency Room
  • Pediatric observation unit and significantly increased outpatient services
  • Addition/expansion of medical and surgical subspecialties
  • District trauma centre for Fraser East

Cancer Centre

BC Cancer Agency: Abbotsford Centre

The Cancer Centre represents the Agency's fifth cancer centre and will provide Fraser Valley residents with a full range of cancer control services—from prevention and early detection, to diagnosis and treatment, to supportive care and education.

 

In addition, the Centre will be part of the Agency's provincial research network, dedicated to enhancing our knowledge about the disease and applying that knowledge to ensure earlier detection, better treatment options and more successful outcomes.

The Cancer Centre will provide:

  • New patient multi-disciplinary consultation and care planning
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Ambulatory Care Unit – 33 consult rooms for cancer patients, chronic disease, and breast health patients
  • Ambulatory Chemotherapy Care Unit – 12 chemotherapy chairs, easy access to pharmacy services, hereditary cancer counseling services, patient nutritional consultation and rehabilitation services
  • Access to national and international clinical trials

Cancer Centre

Fast Facts:
 

New cancer cases in the Fraser Valley are expected to grow by 3.5% per year as compared to 3% growth in the remaining Lower Mainland.  

 

Within 7 years of opening, the Abbotsford Cancer Centre is expected to serve up to 60,000 patient visits per year.
