Healthcare Excellence Canada welcomes Matt Torigian and Megan Hunt to its Board of Directors

The two new Board members bring extensive leadership experience in public policy, health system transformation, First Nations, Inuit and Métis health, community-centred care and digital innovation.

Healthcare Excellence Canada (HEC) is pleased to welcome Matt Torigian and Megan Hunt to its Board of Directors. They bring extensive leadership experience in public policy, health system transformation, First Nations, Inuit and Métis health, community-centred care and digital innovation. As HEC builds on five years of progress and advances its refreshed 2026–2031 strategy, their expertise will help guide the organization's next chapter and strengthen its work with partners to improve healthcare quality and safety across Canada. 

"Matt Torigian and Megan Hunt bring exceptional leadership experience and diverse perspectives that will strengthen HEC's Board of Directors at an important time for the organization," said Gail Tomblin Murphy, Chair of HEC's Board of Directors. "Their leadership will help ensure HEC continues to focus its efforts where they can have the greatest impact and work with partners to spread meaningful improvements further and faster so more people and communities can benefit." 

Matt Torigian, Deputy Minister, Primary and Preventative Health Services, Government of Alberta 

Matt Torigian currently serves as Deputy Minister, Primary and Preventative Health Services, Government of Alberta. An internationally recognized public policy leader, Torigian has spent more than 40 years advancing public safety, community well-being and government transformation across the public and private sectors. He has held senior leadership roles including Ontario's Deputy Solicitor General and Chief of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, where he helped lead large-scale transformation initiatives focused on community safety, service excellence and system improvement. 

"The challenges facing healthcare in Canada require leadership, expertise and innovation to meet the needs of today and create the systems of tomorrow," said Torigian. "I'm excited to join HEC's Board of Directors to help accelerate improvements in safe, high-quality and accessible care across the country." 

Megan Hunt, Deputy Minister of Health for the Government of Nunavut 

Megan Hunt serves as Deputy Minister of Health for the Government of Nunavut. With more than 20 years of experience in Indigenous health systems, digital transformation and primary care innovation, she is recognized for her community-centred approach to leadership and her commitment to advancing culturally safe, equitable care. Since joining the Government of Nunavut, she has worked closely with communities across the territory to strengthen access to care and improve health outcomes. 

"HEC's commitment to improving health systems through collaboration and innovation deeply resonates with my belief in community-driven, culturally grounded care," said Hunt. "I'm inspired by the opportunity to help elevate voices from rural, remote and Indigenous communities in shaping solutions that create meaningful and lasting change." 

HEC's Board of Directors provides strategic oversight to advance the organization's purpose of shaping a future where everyone in Canada has safe, high-quality care. HEC looks forward to the contributions Matt Torigian and Megan Hunt will bring as the organization continues to work with partners to improve healthcare quality and safety across Canada.
