Today we’re launching our strategy for 2021-26 – to help us get closer to where we want to be.

Today we’re announcing the new Chair and Vice-Chair of Healthcare Excellence Canada’s Board of Directors, as well as five new Directors.

My sense of time has shifted in the past year. I’ve divided things up into the “before-times,” “pre-pandemic,” the “between-times” where we find ourselves now, and the “after-times” to come when we’ll have put the between times behind us.

Since its inception in 2006, Patients for Patient Safety Canada (PFPSC) has championed the patient voice and shared lived experiences to advance patient safety. Today, I am pleased to congratulate PFPSC members as we celebrate the 15th Anniversary of this vibrant and energetic network.

To everyone committed to the pursuit of healthcare excellence: You’ve come to the right place. Healthcare Excellence Canada is an organization with a relentless focus on improving healthcare, with – and for – everyone in Canada, connecting the power of people and evidence. It’s about shaping the future of healthcare quality and safety. Together.

In the end, it all boils down to finding a name that reflects and honours all of this. True, a name that does not make you who you are, but when brought to life with partners, it definitely sets you in the right direction to begin to make a name for this organization that includes all of us. Because of who we are, what we will do – and mostly, how we will do it.

The newly amalgamated organization that brings together CFHI and CPSI works with partners to share proven healthcare innovations and best practices in patient safety and healthcare quality. Working together with patients and other partners, we can deliver lasting improvement in patient experience, work life of healthcare providers, value for money and the health of everyone in Canada. The organization is a not-for-profit charity funded by Health Canada.

At our respective Annual General Meetings, members of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) voted to move forward with an amalgamation. Both votes bring CPSI and CFHI another step closer to creating a single quality and safety organization with an expanded capacity to improve healthcare for everyone in Canada.

Recognizing the tremendous opportunity to achieve safer, higher quality, more efficient, coordinated and patient-partnered healthcare, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) are pursuing an amalgamation that would create a single quality and safety organization with an expanded capacity to improve healthcare for everyone in Canada.
